New York: The GCC foreign ministers urged Iran to take positive steps regarding its nuclear programme and hoped that Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council would reach an agreement to eliminate the fears of the international community over Iran's nuclear activities.

The two sides will meet in Geneva on October 1.

The foreign ministers made their statement after a meeting with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on the sidelines of the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The ministers reiterated their call to freeze colonies in the occupied Palestinian territories as well as their support for the Palestinians to establish an independent state in line with UN resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.

They wished that the recently-held meeting between US President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas would speed up efforts to achieve progress in peace efforts.
