British PM warns Iran over nuclear weapons

London: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned Iran on Sunday against its nuclear programme, saying that the Islamic Republic needs to be open and truthful to the international community.
In a television interview with CNN broadcast on Sunday, Brown said Iran must prove it is not interested in developing nuclear weapons.
"Iran has not been totally honest with the international community," Brown told CNN. "We need a firm and absolute commitment that Iran is not going to break from the Non-Profileration Treaty and have nuclear weapons. That is the first stage."
Iran has come under fire for repeatedly refusing to halt its nuclear programme, which it insists is used for domestic purposes only.
The international community has since stepped up sanctions against Iran.
