Cairo: Egyptian authorities on Wednesday said they had foiled a "terrorist plot" targeting vessels using the Suez Canal.

The alleged plot was masterminded by a person residing in the Canal city of Esmailia, the official Middle East News Agency (Mena) reported, quoting an unidentified security source.

The suspect, whose name was given as Sulaiman Rezq, had allegedly sought to recruit some relatives in "carrying out the hostile act with the aim of harming the country's economic resources," added the source.

According to the same source, the suspect had persuaded another person, identified as Salama Ahmad living in the same city, into joining his cause.

The source did not clearly identify the nationalities of the two men.

They seem to be Egyptians due to their names.

Prosecutors ordered that the two be remanded for two weeks pending questioning, Mena added.
