Manama: A Kuwaiti lawyer has said that he wanted to defend Egyptian former President Mohammad Hosni Mubarak and his family.

Faisal Mohammad Al Otaibi said that his move would be "an expression of gratitude to Mubarak for his position during the brutal Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and for his gracious hosting of the Kuwaiti people during the occupation."

In a press release issued in Kuwait City, Al Otaibi said that he was "convinced that Mubarak and his family are innocent."

"That is why I see it as an honour to defend him before a court of law," he said, quoted by Al Watan daily. "President Mubarak has had a significant role and honourable stances with all Arab countries.

"As an Egyptian citizen, he has the right to be defended from popular anger because we must remember that he led the aerial strikes in 1973," Al Otaibi said, referring to the last Egypt-Israeli war.

According to the Kuwaiti lawyer, Mubarak is still innocent.

"An accused is innocent until proven guilty and no court ruling has been issued against Mubarak. He has every right to be defended. The revolution does not aim to suppress democracy or human rights, but rather to guarantee fair trials..."
