Egypt police fire rubber bullets in the air, use tear gas and water cannons against protesters

Cairo: Tens of thousands of Egyptians joined protests on Friday in Cairo and other major cities including Alexandria, Mansoura, Suez and Aswan, witnesses and other reports said.

There was no official figure from the authorities.

Some of the demonstrations turned violent, with protesters clashing with police.

Police fired rubber bullets in the air, and used tear gas and water cannons against protesters in a central Cairo square after a mass Friday prayer attended by Mohammad Al Baradei.

Police prevented Mohammad Al Baradei from leaving an area in Cairo where protests erupted.

Four French journalists reporting on anti-government protests in Cairo were arrested Friday, a foreign ministry spokesman said in Paris.

Egyptians have staged mass protests since Tuesday and web activists have called for Muslims and Christians to demonstrate after Friday prayers. Hundreds have been arrested.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed on Friday for Egypt's leaders and its people not to let violence escalate.

"All concerned, people or leaders, should ensure that the situation in that region, particularly in Egypt should not lead to further violence," Ban said at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
