Cairo: Activists from several Arab countries have launched an alliance in the Egyptian capital with the declared aim of supporting revolts in the Arab world.

The alliance called the Union of the Arab Revolutions was unveiled at a conference held in Cairo on Saturday in the presence of activists from Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.

"The idea of establishing the union was inspired by the spontaneous demonstrations held outside the embassies of Libya, Syria and Yemen [in recent months] in Cairo where demonstrators chanted: ‘Raise your head, you're an Arab', " said Walid Radwan, a member of the union's executive board.

Popular uprisings toppled long-standings presidents in Egypt and Syria earlier this year while, Libya, Syria and Yemen have been gripped by pro-democracy protests and governmental crackdowns over the past four months.

Radwan added that the union plans to send medical supplies to Syria where the regime of President Bashar Al Assad has killed over 1,300 civilians since the start of protests in mid-March, according to local human rights groups.

"This assistance will be handed over to the opposition in Syria in a signal of support to the struggle of the Syrian people," said Radwan. He would not say how the supplies will be delivered in view of strict restrictions imposed by the Syrian authorities.

Meanwhile, Nasr Fat'hi, a member of the union, said that the grouping also supports the UAE right to regain the three islands occupied by Iran since 1971. "The union will support any Arab people's cause anywhere in the world," he added.

The nascent union comprises Egyptian judges Mahmoud Al Khudari and Ahmad Mekki, and former Libyan prime minister Mubarak Al Shameikh, in addition to Arab politicians and media personalities.
