Cairo: Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi, whose country is engaged in an inexorable military campaign against Islamist insurgents, Sunday called on the UN to take “strict measures” to block websites promoting radicalism, the state Middle East News Agency reported.
“The world is experiencing a crucial moment. The fire of terrorism will hit everybody,” Al Sissi was quoted as saying in Cairo. “No people is immune to perils of terrorism. The only solution lies in cooperation of all world countries to fight these militant groups.”
His warning comes days after France experienced its deadliest terrorist attacks in decades.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri Sunday joined other world dignitaries in a massive march held in Paris in honour of the the attack victims.
Al Sissi, a self-styled devout Muslim, has espoused calls for modernizing Islamic discourse since he took office in June.
Last week, he called on Egypt’s leading Islamic authority, Al Azhar, to launch what he dubbed a “religious revolution” as the mostly Muslim country has seen an increase in fatal assaults blamed on Islamist militants in recent months.
It is not clear yet if Al Sissi will attend a global anti-terror conference the US said it is hosting next month.
Egypt has repeatedly called on the the West to extend a US-led military alliance against the strongholds of militant Daesh in Iraq and Syria to cover radical Islamists active in Egypt’s restive Sinai.
