Ramallah: The Israeli regime is proceeding with plans to demolish the centuries-old Palestinian village of Sussia, just south of Hebron in the Occupied West Bank.
It plans to relocate its 350 residents to the nearby town of Yatta.
The far right Jewish movement Regavim has been campaigning to demolish the village, claiming it was built illegally.
According to the Israeli daily, the Haartez, American officials have warned it would respond harshly if Israel proceeds with the plans.
The office of the Israeli Prime Minister announced that the government would act in accordance with the rulings of the Higher Court of Justice which is currently reviewing the petition.
Far right Jewish groups are putting direct and effective pressure on the government to punish what they view as illegal construction by Palestinians.
Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) said the campaign is alarming.
She called on the international community to take concrete measures to hold Israel accountable for its violation of Palestinian rights, land and resources.
“Rather than rewarding Israel and providing it with legal, political and economic cover by means of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the European Neighbourhood Policy and the Horizon 2020 Association Agreement, as wells as the increase in the American military aid package amounting to almost $40 billion, respectively, both the European Union and the US should end their preferential treatment of Israel and adopt serious steps to ensure Israel compliance with their own laws, as wells as with international law and international humanitarian law,” Ashrawi was quoted as saying by the Palestinian official news agency, Wafa.
