Somalis continue to flee to Yemen despite grave risk

182 illegal Ethiopian immigrants including 23 women were arrested from the three Yemeni provinces

Sana’a: Over 14,000 Somalis are expected to flee to Yemen in December according to a Ministry of Interior statement released on Friday.

Apparently, the grave risk that these Somalis take to make the trip, does not deter them, since this figure marks a sharp increase the number of Somali refugees who arrived last month.

In November, a total of 2,690 Somali immigrants including 720 women, and 49 children arrived on the Yemeni coasts in about 52 smuggling boats. Over 100 had drowned when their boat capsized. Another 20 had died of hunger, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, 182 illegal Ethiopian immigrants including 23 women were arrested from the three Yemeni provinces of  Mareb, Abyan and Taiz, the Ministry of Interior said on Friday.

83 Ethiopians, aged 25-40, were  arrested in Mareb and handed over to the immigration office in Sana'a to be deported, according to the Ministry’s statement.

Another 66 Ethiopians were arrested on the Ahwar coast in the Abyan province — 33 were arrested on the Dhubab coast in the Taiz province.
