Al Ain: A layer of fine dust has spread all over the emirates Thursday as strong south-eastern winds have been pushing in from the Saudi Arabian desert.

The winds speed has been feared to go up to 60km/h in the internal areas and 55km/h in the coastal areas under the current unstable weather system described by the forecasters as the Red Sea Trough.

The effect of this low pressure is expected to continue today accompanied with strong south-easterly wind especially over the interior and open regions

NCMS forecaster

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has warned motorists to be careful on highways as horizontal visibility has dropped. This morning visibility was 1,200 metres in Al Dhaffrah, 1,500 meters in Liwa, 2,000 meters in Al Minhad, and 4,000 meters in Abu Dhabi.

"The effect of this low pressure is expected to continue today accompanied with strong south-easterly wind especially over the interior and open regions," said the NCMS forecaster. The sea will be very rough with eight to 12 feet high waves offshore.

The NCMS has also advised people to stay away from the sea during the weekend holidays as the stormy waters could pose serious threat to their safety. The sea is not fit for small boats and fishing trawlers at all, said a forecaster.

An atmospheric high pressure will extend from over the Saudi Arabia to the emirates later today (Thursday), accelerating north-westerly winds to become stronger over the sea. These winds would extend to the western areas and other parts of the country tonight that would cause a substantial decrease in temperature tomorrow (Friday).

The clouds will gradually accumulate and increase in amount over the UAE islands in the Arabian Gulf and the northern areas with a chance of some rain over the northern region especially tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) morning.

Similar conditions are likely to continue on Friday.
