Dubai: Rain on Tuesday caused flooding in some key roads and caused traffic delays in parts of Dubai and Sharjah.

Many roads in International City in Dubai  were flooded. A portion of the road leading up to the Defence Bridge was also flooded, slowing down traffic.

The Dubai Meteorological Office said that unsettled weather is expected until evening, with more thunderstorms and rain expected.

The maximum temperature will be 27 degrees Celcius, with a minimum temperature of 23 degrees Celcius.

The data collected from the weather satellite shows a wide area of the eastern Arabian Peninsula and northern Africa under clouds moving from south to the north.

The weather is expected to be rough on Wednesday with cloudy to partly cloudy conditions with a chance of rain, said the forecast.

In Ras Al Khaimah, the water level at dams has dramatically increased and rainfall in the various areas have been above their annual average.

According to a report issued by the Ministry of Water and Environment, the water in the dams have tremendously increased.

Conditions to remain unsettled

Weather conditions will continue to remain unsettled across the country with more heavy rain and gusty winds expected to hit different areas Monday and Tuesday, according to the national weather bureau.

The atmospheric system responsible for the queer weather has been bringing in moisture-laden clouds from over Ethiopia and the Red Sea via Yemen and Saudi Arabia and resulted in the heavy rain, thunder and hailstorm experienced in different parts of the country on Saturday evening.

"This kind of weather is not unusual in this month," said a weatherman, noting that the rain has been rather delayed this year. February is normally the year's wettest month and witnesses thunderstorms, rain and gusty winds all over the country.

Widespread pattern

The weather system has been moving in a northerly direction, pushing the clouds to Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Heavy rain and snowfall is being reported from Afghanistan and Pakistan's northern areas.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), the weather will continue to be unsettled all over the country.

"Clouds will increase gradually… with heavy rain in areas scattered across the country during evening and at night," the centre's forecast report said.

The NCMS also forecast a slight drop in temperature and warned that winds might also whip up dust and sand that could reduce horizontal visibility in open areas. "The sea will also remain rough," said the report.

Conditions are expected to remain more or less unchanged on Monday, with heavy rain expected across the country along with a further drop in temperatures.

On Saturday, the highest amount of rainfall recorded was 36.2mm at Sharjah Airport, followed by 35.6mm in Al Heben, and 30.8mm in Dhudna area. Ras Al Khaimah Airport saw 32mm of rain, Dubai International Airport 16.7mm, Abu Dhabi International Airport 18.6mm and Fujairah Airport 2.6mm.

Rough seas: Fish prices shoot up

Prices of certain varieties of fish in high demand have risen two to three-fold in Ras Al Khaimah with fishermen avoiding going out to sea and traders in the emirate's fish markets selling available stocks at a premium.

A single mann (equivalent to 4kg) of the locally known khabbat is currently being sold for a minimum of Dh100 as against a price of between Dh30 and Dh40 a few days back.

Authorities in the emirate have urged fishermen to suspend their fishing trips for the coming few days as a precautionary measure in view of the rough weather.

The fishing community, which has been keeping close track of the weather forecasts and warnings, is given to believe that it would be foolhardy to venture out to sea at least till the end of the week.

The days were just beautiful except the loss of properties and lifes. I didn't go to my college today but went out in my car and enjoyed the water puddels, we dont get them much often here. Why is every one crying for a holiday? If people could be more thoughful then they could avoid these sitiations from occuring, by keeping them selfs informed and ready to take action plus i have been up all night driving my car and to be true i have been seeing civil and normal police cars in every hunderd meters of range just to help the needy.....so why is the govt being blamed!!!!

We cannot force the authority to declare holiday but yes we can request the authority to declare holidays which is very truly judged by the flooded water seen in every emirates. We do care about our vehicles for not getting break down in rain water and this can be done only when we are off from work....Dear UAE, our all blessings are with you for the safety of our land....Thanks

terrible traffic , roads floaded, rash driving , i feel authorities should actually take some decision on drivers who are speeding during heavy rain. Many drivers on highway, the double idicators are on and they fly at the top speed. traffic jam n bumper to bumper comes along as a package when you rent a home in shj , why are they cribing so much.

Its been absolutely ridiculous and pathetic to drive when there is shower in this part of the world all the roads get blocked due to traffic and water is being flooded over ever where there has been n number of accidents on the roads due to worst visibility and rash driving even during this climate. I request RTA to take some steps to do for all there roads like emirates road , sheikh zayed road to have solution so there is no water logging and there is flow of traffic.

i think the schools should be closed so the traffic will be half on the roads since 2 days i am leaving for school with my daughter but the roads are so flooded in sharjah with water that in 1 hr time i cannot reach half way to school also and i have to return home with her since the school is next to national paints.Today the school was closed and it was a wise decision.

Some ppl might 'enjoy' this weather and no doubt it is always welcoming but not at the expense of ppl's time and health. I think the RTA has done a very unsatisfactory job when it came to most major roads here, also expecting something fom the Sharjah authorities is a no-brainer, knowing how bad the situation is, companies and especially schools need to give some time off. I'm sorry but if the civic conditions in this country are so badly affected, this is the only option.

Well authorities should take necessary steps to clear up roads and if it takes time then they must declare a holiday. Some people really enjoyed rainfall & hailstorm alot as they were having holidays but they should also think of people engaged in road accidents because of earning some amount of money for thier families. Thank to Ministry of Education they have taken necessary steps clossing down some schools as they should also provide necessary arrangments to drop school children off safely to thier home. I am really thankful to Gulf News for providing live updates to us.

seriously people, what is all the commotion about? its just some rain! sure the infrastructure isn't that well equipped to deal any significant amount of rain but its not like this happens everyday. everyone needs to harden up and deal with it, plan for delays and don't freak out because a bit of water is falling from the sky! i'm sure you think its really scary but honestly harden up people!
