The charges for the ID card will be Dh100 for UAE nationals and Dh500 for expatriates.

The Emirates Identity Authority has approved a draft law making registration and obtaining of ID cards obligatory for nationals and residents, said Dr Saeed Bin Rakan Al Daheri, Director-General of the Emirates Identity Authority.

A draft law on registration and obtaining of ID cards has been approved by the Emirates Identity Authority.

The draft law was approved during a meeting chaired by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior and Deputy Chairman of the authority.

Al Daheri said the cards "will be valid for five years, but personal data on it will be updated during visa renewal. If a resident's visa is cancelled, his or her card will be deactivated automatically. On having a new visa, the card can be activated or renewed", Al Daheri said.

"The law will be enacted before the launch of the ID card project in December. It will help to get access to government services. The law will also obligate authorities to recognise the cards," he said.

Al Daheri said the draft preserves confidentiality and incriminates abuse of information by the authority and providing of incorrect information by members of the public.

"The authority will ensure personal information of individuals is kept confidential and may only be accessed by authorised staff at the authority.

"The system will track every access to information, reasons for this and approval for it. Any staff member who misuses information will face legal action."

For those who wish to obtain ID cards for their children younger than 15 years, the charge will be Dh50 each. Replacement for a lost or damaged card will cost Dh300 for nationals and expatriates.

UAE nationals may need these cards for the entire family, because they could be used for travelling to GCC countries.

Registration with the authority started at the end of June on a six-month trial basis for the UAE military and interior ministry staff.

Al Daheri said registration of the entire population will begin in December and will continue for three years.

Under the unified ID card project, identification cards will be issued at 14 convenient centres nationwide within three days from the date of application.

"The authority will have four centres in Abu Dhabi, one in Al Ain, three in Dubai, two in Sharjah and one each in the remaining emirates.

"In the second stage of the project, the Emirates Identity Authority will be linked to government and non-government organisations eligible to use the authority's database in decision-making.

"Eventually, all access to government services will be linked to the ID card," he said.

ID cards will be produced using the latest technology, including micro-lettering, ultraviolet ink and holograms.
