Few expats turn up in Abu Dhabi for identity card registration on first day
Authorities urge foreign nationals working in government sector to register and not wait for summer vacation when centres will get crowded.
Abu Dhabi: Not many expatriates turned up on the first day of registration for national identity cards, a senior official at the Emirates Identity Authority told Gulf News.
"Contrary to our expectations, only about 100 expatriates registered on Sunday at about 12 centres - three in Dubai and nine in Abu Dhabi," said Thamer Rashed Al Qasimi, Planning Director and Project Management Director at the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).
The registration for expatriates working in the government sector in Abu Dhabi and Dubai started on Sunday. Registration for expatriates was postponed from May 1 to June 1 to facilitate maximum registration of Emiratis who have not finished their registration.
The official said people may be waiting for the school vacations to do the registration. "Some others may be waiting and watching as usual. But we request expatriates in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to register at the earliest before the registration centres get crowded during the school vacation," said Al Qasimi. The appointment system by website can regulate enrolment time according to the convenience of the public.
How to register
You can fix an appointment through call centre, the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) website, or through mobile registration service. The service charge for mobile registration is Dh500 per family (provided that all family members are registered in the same family book or under one sponsorship). Call EIDA at 600523432 or log on to www.emiratesid.ae.
