Expat professionals urged to register for identity card

Expatriate professionals can register for an identity card which can be used as multipurpose smartcard, a senior official told Gulf News on Thursday.

Abu Dhabi: Expatriate professionals can register for anl identity card which can be used as multipurpose smartcard, a senior official told Gulf News on Thursday.

"We have started the registration for professionals from July 1. By professionals, we mean any university degree holder other than the labourers," said Darwish Ahmad Al Zarouni, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).

EIDA started registration of expatriate employees of federal and local government organisations on June 1. The expats in government sector have to complete the registration by October 2008, said Al Zarouni.

He said the registration of Emiratis is continuing and EIDA is committed to finish their registration by the end of 2008.

Emirati registration

About 60 per cent of Emiratis have already registered, said Thamer Rashid Al Qasimi, Planning Director and Project Management Director at EIDA.

"The remaining people are from western and northern parts of the country and we are trying to inspire them," Al Qasimi told Gulf News.

He said that EIDA targets to finish the registration for expatriates by 2010.

Fees and validity

- Dh100 for UAE nationals for five years. It is free for UAE nationals under social security.

- Expatriates have to pay Dh100 per annum in accordance with the validity of the residence visa. Extra months will be calculated as a year. For example, if your visa is valid for two year and two months, it will be calculated as three years, you have to pay Dh300 to get an identity card.

- Registration of children below 15 is mandatory but free of charge, identity card for them is optional which costs Dh50. For more information: Call EIDA at 600523432 or log on to www.emiratesid.ae.

Suggestions rewarded

Residents can get rewards for giving suggestions to improve the identity cards and services related to it, Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) announced.

Residents and EIDA staff can earn reward points by giving the suggestions to improve the services; the pointed will be transformed into rewards which can be a prize money or appreciation letters, said Al Zarouni.

The customers can register themselves on the website of EIDA (www.emiratesid.ae) to give their suggestions.
