Sharjah: King Faisal Road was closed to traffic yesterday and will now reopen on Saturday, a senior police official said.
The main thoroughfare was temporarily closed by Sharjah Police in coordination with the Directorate of Public Works. The traffic-lights at the intersection were switched off and motorists asked to take the side roads.
"The traffic signal has been switched off so that the road can be widened. King Faisal Road is one of the most vital roads in Sharjah and there has always been heavy congestion as a large number of vehicles use the road on a daily basis," said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Bin Darwish, head of the Anjad Patrols.
He pointed out that the road closure is meant to facilitate easier traffic movement in the long-term.
Motorists travelling from King Abdul Aziz Road to the Central Souq (Souq Al Markazi) will now be diverted to the right and will have to take a U-turn that will lead them underneath the bridge and towards Al Wahda Street. However, motorists going towards King Faisal Bridge will not be affected.
Lt Col Bin Darwish urged motorists to follow signs indicating the diversions and to call the hotline number 80086767 for any clarifications or complaints.
