Abu Dhabi: The Traffic Police in the emirate has urged motorists to slow down at traffic signals. This comes after the death of two Arab nationals following a horrific crash near one of the capital's traffic signals.

Two Syrians died on the spot on Friday evening as their car collided with another vehicle which was being driven by an Emirati, said a statement from Abu Dhabi Traffic Police.

Preliminary investigations suggested that a car jumped the red light, which caused the horrific accident that occurred near Al Dhafra and Shahin Streets, said Yaslim Mubarak Al Tamimi, Head of Major Accident Department of Abu Dhabi Traffic Police.

"The Emirati sustained minor injuries in the accident," he said.

Traffic Police reached at the spot minutes after the incident and diverted traffic on to other roads to avoid bottlenecks.

Al Tamimi urged motorists to slow down on approaching traffic signals so that they can easily stop the vehicle, even if the signal turns red.

Most of the accidents occurring near traffic signals are horrific, which leads to death or major injuries, he said.
