Sharjah: New traffic diversions at Government Square will be in effect as of Friday and will be open to the public by next Sunday, police announced on Thursday.
Sharjah Police and Sharjah Municipality will partially close several routes leading towards Government Square, and the project will be carried out in four stages over a period of three weeks.
Lt Col Ahmad Ebrahim Bin Darwish, Acting Head of the road project department at Sharjah Police, said that the road construction involves repaving Government Square and all the routes leading to it.
Due to the construction works, several traffic diversions will be put into place to divert motorists to the correct route. The first phase involves closing down Ibrahim Mohammad Al Midfa Street that links Kuwait Square to Government Square, which is located opposite Sharjah Municipality. The route is expected to be open by Sunday.
The second phase will be carried from July 17 to 19, and the road works will temporarily close the road from Estiqlal Square towards Government Square.
The third road closure will take place in two areas and will be carried out from July 24 to 26, which involves closing the road from Al Zahra Square (also known as Clock Roundabout) in addition to Al Arouba Road that lead towards Government Square.
The final phase is expected to take place from July 31 to August 2, in where the road from Mina Street leading towards Kuwait Square will be closed.
Lt Col Bin Darwish said that Anjad patrols will be deployed to organise traffic.
