The toll
Environment protection has got top preference in the public transport master plan launched by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.
Environment protection has got top preference in the public transport master plan launched by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.
"Public transport buses are environment friendly as they cause lower air pollution compared to cars," said Mohammad Al Hashemi, Director of Planning and Business Development Department at the RTA's Public Transport Agency.
He said that all the RTA buses are equipped with environment-friendly EuroIV engines. "We also use environment friendly 50 ppm (par per million) diesel, which is especially imported from abroad because only 500 ppm diesel is sold in the UAE."
Clean air
The 50 ppm is ultra-low-sulphur fuel and is eco-friendly. The benefits are cleaner engines, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, which can otherwise cause respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
Although vehicle emissions are gases, pollutants are measured by weight.
At an average a car emits 34.4 kilograms of hydrocarbons a year, 4029.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide and 29.6 kilograms of Nitrogen oxide. Multiply the emissions from one car with over one million vehicles in Dubai and around two million in the UAE - it is a chemical soup that leads to respiratory ailments.
The World Health Organisation has listed air pollutants as one of the causes of lung cancer, which kills 1.3 million people worldwide each year.
