Dubai: More than Dh28 million was raised at a distinguished licence plate auction held by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) yesterday, with the most sought-after plate, G80, fetching Dh2.64 million.

Part of a series of such auctions organised by the authority, the RTA auctioned three two-digit numbers, and a number of four and five digit numbers to more than 300 bidders at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The three two-digit numbers, including F91 and F62, fetched a total of Dh6.42 million.

F91 came second, fetching Dh2 million, followed by F62, which went for Dh1.96 million.

The plate spread over 14 categories under the codes F, G and D, the nominal value for which was estimated as Dh5.2 million, RTA said.

To be improved

Eng. Maitha Obaid Bin Udai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, said that the purpose of organising these auctions was to meet the desire of a large category of the Dubai community to obtain distinguished numbers.

"In response to the desire of these segments, RTA will continue staging these auctions through the end of 2007, but auctions will be much improved and better presented in 2008."
