Sharjah: Police have said they will intensify Anjad patrols around the city during the Eid holiday to regulate the expected increase in traffic.

Colonel Mohammad Eid Al Madhloum, Director of Operations at Sharjah Police, told Gulf News on Wednesday that police had taken the necessary steps to provide a safe traffic environment for motorists during Eid Al Fitr.

"We expect a huge rush of traffic along main roads and within residential neighbourhoods, and the operations control room is equipped and ready to receive calls from residents during the holidays, whether related to traffic problems or crimes," Col Al Madhloum said.

Rescue teams

Throughout the Eid holiday, ambulances and rescue teams will be deployed to all areas in the emirate of Sharjah, and during the day, the number of Anjad patrols will be intensified in order to regulate the traffic flow near musallas and mosques.

"But at night, Anjad patrols will focus on areas that are located near shopping centres, such as Al Qasba, Mega Mall and Sahara Centre.

"We will also intensify patrols in areas with parks and tourist destinations," he said, adding that they expect heavy traffic congestion on the roads along Khalid Lagoon and at Al Mamzar.

Col Al Madhloum urged motorists to pay particular attention while driving in residential neighbourhoods on the first and second days of Eid.

"Children tend to play outdoors in front of their homes and unfortunately their lives are at risk because they play very close to the road," he said.

Caution needed

"Motorists should take great caution and reduce their speed near areas with pedestrian crossings."

He also urged motorists to adhere to the traffic rules and regulations, and encouraged motorists to contact the operations control room at 999 so that police can provide them with the necessary assistance in the event of any kind of incident.
