Cost for standard Dubai Metro ticket and special fares announced
Dubai: Fares for Dubai Metro will range from a minimum of Dh1.80 to a maximum of Dh6.50 for a single journey.
Read in-depth on Dubai Metro
The minimum Metro fare for a short trip for up to three kilometres will be Dh1.80 if a passenger is using a prepaid card. It will cost Dh2 if the passenger uses a standard single journey paper ticket.
The maximum fare for a single journey will be Dh6.50 when using a paper ticket and Dh5.80 when using the card.
The fares will be valid for trains, public buses and the water buses for a single journey. This means a passenger using the metro can continue his or her trip on buses without paying any additional fare.
The Roads and Transport Authority has provided various fare options to passengers including daily and monthly passes.
The daily pass will cost Dh14 for unlimited trips on the metro and public buses all over the city. The monthly passes range from Dh100 to Dh270.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Dubai RTA announced the metro fares yesterday at a press conference at the new RTA headquarters.
"We will not be making any profits out of this fare structure as we want maximum people to use public transport," said Al Tayer. "We have made the fares affordable for all because we want to encourage our citizens, residents and visitors to use mass transit means," he added.
Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council has approved the fare structures after endorsing the order governing mass transit fares in Dubai.
The fare can be paid by means of Unified Electronic Fare Card (UAFC) known as "Nol Card" (an Arabic word meaning "fare" or "cost of using transport") which is an electronic "pay-as-you-go" system introduced by the RTA.
The new fare structure will be implemented with the launch of the Red Line of the Dubai Metro on September 9 this year.
Children under five years of age will travel free while students and senior citizens will get special discounts. A monthly pass for students will cost Dh170 for unlimited trips while a pass for senior citizens for a month will cost Dh200.
The unified prepaid Nol cards will be available at the stations and vending machines, petrol stations and stores all over the city.
Al Tayer said that parking for metro users would be free at the three designated parking lots. These include lots at Al Rashidiya, Al Qusias and Jumeirah Islands Stations. Parking fee is set to be Dh10 per hour and Dh50 per day for those not using the Metro.
"It is to avoid misuse of these parking lots," he said.
Ramadan Abdullah, Director of the Rail Operations Department at the RTA, said that there would be four types of Nol card - Nol Silver, Nol Blue, Nol Gold Card, and Nol Red Ticket.
"The cards will be available at ticketing booths and ticket vending machines at all Dubai Metro stations, bus stations, RTA Customer Service Centres and at RTA authorised sales agents. Nol cards can be topped up and the fare will automatically be deducted depending on the use," he added.
The RTA has divided the city into five mobility zones to effectively implement the fare structure (see map and graphic).
- With inputs by Mohammad Al Khan, Staff Reporter
How it works: Mobility zones
The RTA has divided the city into five mobility zones to effectively implement the fare structure. A passenger has to pay more if he travels in more zones.
A commuter has to complete his journey within 90 minutes if he is using a single journey ticket for a short trip with minimum fare for up to three kilometres. He will be allowed one transfer between two modes of transport - train and bus or bus and train - within 30 minutes.
If a passenger holds a ticket for one zone or multiple zones, he will have to complete his journey within 180 minutes and he will be allowed three transfers between the different modes of transport.
If a user wants to travel on Dubai Metro and then take a bus to reach a certain destination, the user has to take the bus within 30 minutes to avoid charges for the second fare. If he takes the bus within 30 minutes, it will be considered a single journey.
What do you think of the new fares? Is this a good incentive for you to use the Metro on a regular basis?
GREAT!!!I suggest, Bluetooth enabled devices should get messages on the arrival(nearest location of bus) of bus, while switching from Train to Bus and/or to Water Bus to finish one journey. We get to know such things in Bangalore regarding BMTC's Volvo buses.

The Daily pass of the Metro should be Valid on all Metro trains and Buses like in other metropolitan cities. The fares are just about right, and having the right frequency/schedule of trains and buses will make the Dubai Metro a great success. Inshallah!

Paying for Parking AED 10 per hour? This is too much. It should be free parking for those who purchase the monthly pass. Come on, we can not afford it. we working more than 10hours a day. This is unreasonable. I might as well use my car to drive all the way to work then

I am very happy to read this news, the fare is absolutely fair and super fantastic! Having been in Sydney for the past 3 years where the public transport is reasonably prompt but really expensive and very dirty, this is refreshing! In Sydney a daily ticket costs close to AED 50 but in Dubai its only AED 14..of course, the network here is much bigger and includes ferries also..but still, the Dubai Metro fares are wow!

Firstly, i wont be using the metro as i cant live without my car, secondly the fares are expensive as compared to singapore and malaysia. I cant understand how on the earth can RTA claim its the cheapest in the world. lets compare apple to an apple and not apple to a mango..How can they compare the fares with New York,Paris and London?

I have lived in Dubai for many years and I can say with confidence that this time limit of 30 minutes or 180 minutes will not encourage people to adopt mass transit systems. The concept of Zones is good but the ticket should be basically for the whole day till the last service.

I am so happy and excited. Last time when I was in Fareast, I was using Metro and it is an excellent service. Nothing is better than this. Last week I was telling my family that I am praying for Dubai Government and RTA for their success and let God Bless them. All their dreams come true as schedule 09/09/09 let Metro start. May be some people will think I am gone mad. But you are wrong. Because I travel by fancy bus and walk everyday to catch the bus from my office more than 35 minutes with this heat. Once we catch bus they need to drop each and every person to their desitantion and it takes to reach me home more than 1 1/2 hrs. By the time i reach home i am Exhausted and no time to spend with the family. Cooking, taking lesson for children, cleaning and prepare for next day and go to bed . Get up at 4.30 am , prepare breakfast, run to the catch fancy bus. These buses are not even staying for 2 seconds. At least when METRO STARTS 090/09/09, I WILL REACH HOME EARLY. My one more request, please arrange the reasonable transportation from Metro station to near by offices and malls. Once again thank you Dubai Government and RTA and wish you all the best. My special prayers are always with you to complete this project

The rates are fare enough. My real worry is how we get to Metro stations. For example, those who are working in DIC, DMC and Knowledge village (Tecom) Metro stations are on the opposite side of Sh. Zayed road. Walking such a distance (1-3 kms) under hot sun is not a good idea. Is it going to be more connection buses within Tecom?

First of all, congratulations and thanks to RTA for declaring an attractive fare rate on metro. I feel that the fare structure is affordable to the public. Some attractive fare package on monthly basis for commuters may help RTA to achieve its target to ease traffics on dubai roads forever. But public is still confused of the location of the station and whether there is any free transport system to the Metro station.

I think the student fares are little high. As it is they are getting school buses ranging from 100 to 200, this rates will not attract them to use metro. Also they may have to walk from the stations. So if the rates for them is reduced, there will be big reduction in road traffic at office hours.

It is an excellent and unexpected fare (fair) decision by the great RTA. The traffic congestion will drastically decrease soon and this will give positive impact on many aspects in favour of people. One thing can be recognsidered that single journey time frame could be changed from 30min to 45min. Because people may go to any shopping mall or store nearby once they get down either from bus or metro between (single) journey.

It's really a great move from the RTA to provide public transport on a attractive fare. But the student pass is still very high compared to the present charges the parents are paying to buses. more over, children of the age group below 10 need the help of the parents or another adult to accompany to the school and back from school, including parents monthly pass will be very expensive. So, if the RTA takes a package form which can be competitive with current school bus fee it will be really helpful. Also young children will have a great relief from the tiring bus journey every day.

I don't understand the Dhs 1.8 or Dhs 5.8 fare because there is no coin for 20 fils, and no one returns 5 and 10 fils anywhere in the UAE. In normal transactions, either retail stores charge customers 25 fils for payment between 0-25 fils or let it go. Will this mean that passengers will be paying more than this stated fare while using a prepaid card. Secondly, the article states "A monthly pass for students will cost Dh170 for unlimited trips, while a senior citizen's pass for a month will cost Dh200". However, the caption on Picture 3 of this article states "A 30 day pass for students will cost Dh170, and for elderly it will cost Dh30".

The fare is FANTASTIC! I hope they won't change this...Kudos to all involve in planning the fares. I plan to use the train only to relieve me from stress while driving everyday.

Very affordable fares, I thought it would be around DHS 10 per trip but above fares look good. Definately many people will use trains
