Abu Dhabi: Safe driving will pay off as the Caltex RoadStar campaign comes to the capital for the first time on May 21, two days after being held in Dubai.

Motorists who follow the rules of the road will be pleasantly surprised when police stop them and hand over cash prizes of Dh750 along with a certificate from the police.

The campaign runs for two days both in Abu Dhabi (May 21 to 22) and Dubai (May 18 and 19).

"The contest aims at encouraging people to follow the rules. The monetary perks will definitely help reach out to the public," Captain Ahmad Salem Al Niyadi, Head of Media and Public Relations section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic Department, told Gulf News.

Rush hour patrol

Police will patrol the city during rush hour in the morning and spot drivers who follow basic rules such as wearing the seat belt, using hands-free cell phone sets, using indicators, child safety seats, observing lane discipline and courtesy in addition to adhering to speed limits.

Organised by Emirates Motor Sports Federation (EMSF), Caltex is the main sponsor of the campaign. Other sponsors include Lexus (Al Futtaim Motors), Axa Insurance and the International Automobile Touring Club, with Gulf News, Wheels and Radio2 FM as media partners.

"Its our first venture in Abu Dhabi and so it is exciting. The target is to give away Dh30,000 to good drivers. This means we would identify around 12-15 drivers", said Roshanara Sait, the Director of Marketing and Business Development at EMSF.

Though identifying just over a dozen drivers may sound easy, in practice this is not so, added Sait, speaking based on their Dubai experience.

Al Niyadi said that the drivers would be assessed for roughly 5-7 minutes before the verdict is made.

Apart from the cash reward and the certificate, gifts and T-shirts will also be given away.
