Ras Al Khaimah: Speed humps have been set up on Salem Bin Sultan Street, in front of the fish and vegetable market in Al Ma'amourah, where a number of accidents have occurred.
"Many road accidents have been reported at the exit from the market," said Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Saeed Al Jeeda, who heads the Traffic Section at the Traffic and Licensing Department.
"This particular street has proved to be one of the worst in the emirate. It has turns that are extremely dangerous to motorists," he said.
The Traffic and Licensing Department discussed the problems with the emirate's Works and General Services department.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Jeeda said the turn opposite Al Ma'amourah Fish and Vegetable Market was the most dangerous part of the street, where a great number of road accidents were reported.
"A power generator located on the turn, which feeds major parts of the surrounding areas was repeatedly damaged in road accidents and those areas suffered a total blackout," Lieutenant Colonel Al Jeeda said.
"A total of 17 serious road accidents were reported on this particular turn since the beginning of the year until the end of the last month," he added.
Most drivers speed in that area and suddenly face a sharp turn, where they then lose control over their vehicles.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Jeeda stressed that with the installation of the speed humps, the concerned departments believe the number of road accidents reported in that area will drop.
He added that the necessary lights and signs were also installed to warn the drivers of the humps that had been installed.
