RAK authorities clamp down on transportation of food
Civic authorities here on Friday seized two vehicles and fined the drivers for transporting food and water without refrigeration.
Ras Al Khaimah: Civic authorities here on Friday seized two vehicles and fined the drivers for transporting food and water without refrigeration.
Adel Ali Al Deek, head of the environment and public health department at RAK Municipality, said vehicles transporting food here from other emirates did not generally comply with municipal regulations, which require the installation of refrigeration.
Yesterday municipal inspectors stopped a vehicle transporting water bottles and containers from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah and the shipment was inspected.
Al Deek said inspectors stopped this vehicle for the second day in a row and found the same violation. The water bottles and containers were not sealed properly and the inspectors reported water leaking from many containers. Al Deek said the vehicle did not have refigeration and was not covered.
The shipment had been exposed to the sun. The vehicle was transporting 80 gallons of drinking water when it was stopped.
For the first violation, the inspectors ordered the driver to pay a Dh1,000 fine and he signed a pledge not to repeat the violation.
But the following day municipal inspectors stopped the same vehicle and find it carrying the same quantity of water, still without refrigeration. Al Deek said the vehicle was seized and the driver was fined Dh5,000.
Municipal inspectors stopped another vehicle coming from Dubai carrying fruit, vegetables and eggs to a Ras Al Khaimah-based company.
Al Deek said the eggs and vegetables were seized after inspectors found they were rotten.
The inspectors ordered the driver to pay a Dh1,000 fine and he signed a pledge to install refrigeration.
The municipality granted the driver a week's grace period.
Al Deek said the municipality insists on refigeration systems being installed in vehicles that transport food, especially during the hot summer months.
