Abu Dhabi A police officer was injured seriously in a motorbike crash last week.

The accident took place on December 22 at around 10am at the intersection between Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street (Airport Road) and Al Falah Street (Passport Road).

An Abu Dhabi police official confirmed the accident, but declined to identify the Emirati official.

A resident who was at the scene told Gulf News: "I saw the crash happen … A white four-wheel drive crashed into the policeman's motorbike."

"I never thought the policeman would survive. It was that bad," added the witness, who requested not to be identified. The police officer was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the eyewitness, the accident happened when the motorbike overtook the four-wheel drive vehicle at the traffic signal.

Abu Dhabi police did not reveal the cause of the accident, whether the policeman was at fault or whether he jumped a red traffic light.

An official said that the policeman "is in a stable condition now".

The policeman may have been on his way to attend to an accident, he added.

Traffic police are investigating the accident.

Meanwhile, the driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle was taken into custody at the scene.
