Police urge motorists not to park in special needs, fire hydrant slots
Abu Dhabi Police have urged motorists not to park their vehicles in places allocated for people with special needs or in front of fire hydrants in residential areas, near malls and government departments.
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police have urged motorists not to park their vehicles in places allocated for people with special needs or in front of fire hydrants in residential areas, near malls and government departments.
The police have stressed that anyone who violates these rules will be fined.
Colonel Engineer Hussain Ahmad Al Harithi, Director of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety Department, said many complaints have been received from people with special needs, who could not park their vehicles in designated places, because other cars occupied the space.
More than 6,617 violations were issued between January and June 13 to people who failed to observe the rules regarding special needs parking and fire hydrant spaces.
Al Harithi described this behaviour as uncivilised, adding that it violates the rights of this category of society, who need the help and support.
He said 540 special needs permits were issued in Abu Dhabi allowing cars to park in the clearly indicated, blue-painted parking spots.
Al Harithi called on the people who carry these permits to clearly display them behind their windshields to avoid receiving a fine.
He explained that if the driver of the vehicle was a person with special needs, then they would be allowed to use special needs parking at all times, while the drivers of people with special needs are not allowed to do that.
He also warned against abusing the system by lending these permits to other people or using them for long-term parking.
This causes people with special needs to look for other parking, which may be far away from their homes or work and increases their suffering.
