Nol Card machine malfunction leaves commuters stranded
Passengers unable to recharge permits with new credit and some vending machines run out of new cards.
Dubai: Some passengers using the Dubai Metro and public buses say they are facing problems using the new Nol Cards - introduced as part of the unified automated fare collection system in the emirate.
The Nol Card has replaced all previous fare systems used on public buses.
Gulf News received complaints from passengers during the last couple of days regarding Nol Cards. Some said that they were unable to recharge the Nol Cards at the ticket vending machines placed near bus stops and thus unable to travel by bus.
Others say that some machines ran out of new cards and they could not take public buses because the drivers did not top up the cards, many people did not have Nol Cards.
Ollie De Leon, a commuter, said that he could not recharge his card because the vending machine was down and there were not many of them around.
Abdul Rahman, a frequent bus user, said that Nol Cards were not available on public buses. He also said that Nol Card recharging machines, installed at bus stops, broke down on the second day of operation.
Many commuters got stranded at bus stops in Deira and Bur Dubai as they didn't have credit in their Nol Cards and could not recharge them.
Breakdown: Matter being investigated
Abdullah Al Madani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Corporate Support Services at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said that he would look into the issue of ticket vending machines breaking down.
He said that passengers who face any problem should also call the RTA customer service number 8009090 so that immediate action should be taken.
Al Madani said that customers can buy and also recharge their Nol Cards at the stations, ticket vending machines, Redha Al Ansari Exchange, Spinneys (selected outlets), RTA customer service centre and any branch of the Emirates Bank.
