New Sharjah parking lots for heavy trucks

The allocated parking lots will be at Al Saja'a and industrial areas 3, 6, 10, 12 and 18

Sharjah: The municipality has allocated six designated parking lots for heavy trucks to reduce traffic congestion in several industrial areas, it was announced on Monday.

Sultan Al Mualla, Director General of Sharjah Municipality, explained that the parking lots were made to prevent heavy trucks from parking negligently in the city's roads, which ultimately fuels traffic congestion in the areas.

The allocated parking lots will be at Al Saja'a and industrial areas 3, 6, 10, 12 and 18, and will accommodate up to 1,200 trucks.

"We have already received the allocated land and are working on the final preparations, and expect the parking lots to be ready within the next few months," said Al Mualla.

"We have also received a number of complaints about trucks being stolen so by giving them their own parking spaces, it will be more secure and we expect that thefts will be prevented," he pointed out.

Al Mualla also noted that the new parking lots will maintain the city's aesthetic image.

"Previously, we issued out warnings for truck drivers and set up warning signs for drivers not to park on the side of the road in industrial areas but they continued to flout the rules," he said.

He said that a fee will be imposed on truck drivers using the parking lots, but that the charges have not yet been determined.

"Once the project is finalised, we will carry out a survey and if there is a positive response from truck drivers, we will then consider adding further parking spaces in more industrial areas," Al Mualla said.
