Dubai: More than 70 motorists who committed traffic offences were caught on live video footage in a week.

Dubai Police's Traffic Department had started the use of a mobile camera system to catch offenders committing dangerous traffic offences such as speeding, not abiding by lane lines and using mobile phones while driving.

Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the mobile video cameras have issued 77 on the spot fines in a week.

Vigilance

"Around 50 per cent of the fines were issued for speeding in the first place. There were motorists caught speeding over 180km/hr," he told Gulf News.

Brigadier Al Zafein said two undercover police patrols, which have the cameras installed have been on the roads 24 hours to catch offenders.

"The focus in the first phase is on highways and external roads, as 60 per cent of deaths in road accidents occur on highways. Most of these fines were issued on Shaikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road and Dubai-Al Ain Road," he said.

The mobile camera system consists of a recorder, a control device, a camera, a radar and a screen and it can be installed in any police patrol vehicle.

Mobile radars

Brigadier Al Zafein had earlier said that there are currently 14 mobile radars on the roads and will be increased to 29 by the end of the year.

He had said that by the end of this year, there will be a total of 450 radars of various types on Dubai roads.

More than a million fines

According to statistics from the traffic department, more than one million fines have been issued in the first five months of this year with an increase of around 40 per cent compared to the same period of last year which reported more than 600,000 offences.

Some of the main offences included speeding, blocking traffic, parking in prohibited areas, lane violation and not leaving enough distance between vehicles.
