Dubai: A quick run on the Dubai Metro and into some of the 10 stations opened along the Red Line, commuters will find few shops already open that offer any refreshment or entertainment like books or newspapers.

At the Mall of the Emirates station, rail users can find bookshops, snacks, and a wide selection of electronic stores in the corridor within the mall leading to the station's walkway.

At the Financial Centre station, a juice shop which is currently closed promises to offer some fruity refreshment after Ramadan. At the Khalid Bin Waleed station, a Zoom shop will open soon.

In addition to this, 28 convenience stores run by Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) are planned - 18 of these on the Red Line and 10 on the Green Line.

Saeed Abdullah Khoury, Enoc group chief executive officer said Zoom would add value to Dubai Metro commuters by offering them on-the-go convenience shopping.

"The Dubai Metro has changed the face of Dubai's traffic infrastructure and is billed to become an increasingly preferred mode of transport. The opening of Zoom, a fresh retail concept, adds to the overall experience," he said.

The stores will open from 7am to 12am.

Khalid Bin Waleed Metro station will also house the first Ramee Deli outlet. All in all, 10 delis are planned along the Red Line, said Raj Shetty, chairman and managing worker at the Ramee Group of Hotels and Resorts.

In keeping with the water theme, the outlet has been designed around it.

"This station will be an interchange for [the] Red and Green Lines, which means more footfall, plus this station will not only attract a lot of people working in Bur Dubai but also tourists and leisure shoppers of BurJuman Shopping Mall," said Shetty.

With so few options at the stations and the stated Dh200 fine for eating and drinking at the stations and on the trains, travellers may well be doing themselves a favour by getting on the trains without any road-snacks.
