Dubai: Four people were killed and another was seriously injured in a crash on Emirates Road in Dubai on Friday night, a senior traffic official said.

"Three of the victims died at the crash site, while another succumbed to injuries at Rashid Hospital. The fifth person in the car continues to be in critical condition," said Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution, adding that all of them are believed to be Syrian nationals.

Bu Farousha said the crash, which took place at 9.45pm, was the result of reckless driving and speeding. "The driver lost control of the vehicle, which turned over."

Another car overturned on Dubai-Al Ain Road on Friday night but the Emirati driver walked away with moderate injuries, the chief prosecutor said.

One more death was reported as two other accidents took place in the Al Qusais Industrial Area.

An Indian jaywalker was killed on Saturday morning after he was run over by a vehicle driven by another Indian. The chief traffic prosecutor said the accident was caused due to the driver's carelessness.

Another jaywalker escaped with critical injuries when a similar accident took place in the same area on Friday night. The Indian was admitted to Rashid Hospital.

All four accidents took place in a span of ten hours.

I am outraged to see how drivers behave on the roads here. It is not a matter of nationality. What is the matter? Overtake rudely just to be one car ahead? Flashing lights at people who drive at the right speed just because you want to pass? Never use any signal, let alone one of the mirrors to change lane or insert in the traffic? Is it worth reminding people that a car is not a power tool and men are not manly when they drive recklessly? Pictures of road casualties should be spread on roads or at least a little training at some ER should be envisaged to grasp the meaning of their irresponsibility. But I forgot, to content your ego because someone did not yield, did not go fast enough or else is so much more important. The driver considers his driving safe, he can master his engine, the others are just fools who know nothing! That's good guys! Never question yourself, you are always right!

Many a times jaw walkers are injured by their carelessness. For easy crossing, they cross where ever they like, not in designated points. And it is almost impossible for any driver to stop the car, since it is unexpected. If anyone sees in advance, nobody would run over a person, not even a cat or dog. There should be some strict laws for this.

Jay-walking should be defined as a crime. How do you hold a driver responsible for hitting someone who runs across the road from nowhere?! I have had so many near-misses with people running across 6 lanes or across highways and bridges - should we now drive to avoid people on the roads who should not be there in the first place??

When personally driving and i see these jaywalkers on the roads like Dubai-Sharjah highway, i feel very angry that not only do they put themselves in danger, they put multiple drivers in danger as one may swerve to avoid them and end up causing multiple accidents. On the other hand, in deep summer, you feel sorry for these people as it's extremely hot and there are next to no method of crossing from one side to the other. Even the crossing built that is attached to Sahara mall. It's good for those next to it, but there is not one single day that i do not see men and women running across the road jumping over the barrier as it's far to walk to the crossing. I suppose the only solution is to build multiple crossings / underpasses for pedestrians at multiple points throughout certain roads. What other option is there realistically? There's no forcing people to walk 100s of metres in the sun to use a crossing to get to the otherside. It's just not going to happen
