Female taxi drivers to serve women, families
Eight vehicles will be allotted initially
Sharjah: The Sharjah Transport company yesterday announced that it has launched a women's dispatch taxi service to cater to women and families in the emirate.
Mohammad Al Buraimi, director of reservation and distribution services for taxis at Sharjah Transport, said eight vehicles have been dedicated to serving women and families — four saloons and four seven-seater vehicles.
Customer response
"We will further expand the women's services in the future but for the time-being, we will study the customers' response," Al Buraimi said.
Customers can order a taxi by calling the toll-free dispatch number 600 545455, where female taxi drivers will be allocated to transport women to universities and hospitals, in addition to other destinations.
However, there is a Dh5 booking charge that comes as an additional fee for passengers, who are already burdened with a Dh10 minimum fare.
The dispatch service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"The taxi dispatch service was launched early July last year that catered to 58 per cent of our customers. We received an average of up to 8,000 dispatch calls a month across various nationalities in the community," Al Buraimi added.
Al Buraimi also pointed out that the percentage of bookings made after midnight had risen as now as many as 50 bookings are made a night.
Passengers are requested to wait outside their homes for the taxi but if they are unable to find it, they are urged to contact the dispatch operator who will then follow up on the taxi's whereabouts.
