Dubai: Two expatriates were burnt to death when their car caught fire after a collision on Al Wasl Road on Friday evening, the police said.
A Briton and a Zimbabwean woman died when their car was hit by another vehicle as they were making a U-turn. The victims were 23 and 20 respectively.
A police officer said the driver of the ill-fated vehicle had entered the road without making sure it was clear and was trying to enter a residential area.
"The motorist who hit them was an Emirati woman," he said. Her vehicle hit the passenger side of the other car near the fuel tank.
"The two tried to get out of the car, but the fire spread swiftly and they died in the car," he said.
The accident took place on Al Wasl Road near Spinneys, heading from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
"Police and Civil Defence teams arrived on the scene and tried to put out the fire. But the victims had already died. The female driver sustained minor injuries," the officer said.
According to a police official, the female driver said she was driving towards the U-turn when she saw the other car and the driver seemed hesitant about whether to enter or not. When she came near, he had entered the road and she could not avoid a collision.
First Lieutenant Ali Al Naqbi of the Dubai Police Rescue Department said police used hydraulic equipment to get the bodies out of the car and that it took them a long time.
"The bodies were burnt and everything around had melted in the heat," he said.
Ahmad Obaid, a witness, said it was a "horrible" sight.
"I saw huge flames and the car was on fire. The car was a mess and I think the victim's father was there. He was screaming 'This is my son's car, where is my son'," he said.
Salah Bou Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution, who was seen at the scene of the accident, said it occurred at around 4:30 pm at street 15 C on Al Wasl Road.
The two expatriates were driving a Peugeot and the other car was a white Audi, said Bou Farousha.
Police cordoned off the area and traffic came to a halt for a long time.
