Dubai: A trial run of the Dubai Metro trains will start in April, said a senior official.
"From April, the RTA [Roads and Transport Authority] will start a trial run for the Dubai Metro on the new test track site that runs 11km from Ibn Battuta Station to Jebel Ali Metro Depot," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.
People in Dubai will see the trains running up and down the test track but the carriages will be empty.
The first train for the Dubai Metro is expected to reach Dubai in March after the completion of its trial run, said a senior official.
Milestone
An RTA delegation led by Al Tayer visiting Japan, also rode the train which is on a trial run in Japan. Al Tayer said the test run was successful.
"The train moved smoothly without any wobbling, sounds or noises; as it is electrically-driven."
The test was also attended by the UAE Ambassador to Japan Saeed Al Nuwais, CEO of the Rail Agency Abdul Majeed Al Khaja, CEO of Marine Agency Mohammad Obaid Al Mulla and a number of other senior officials.
The delegation had the experience of riding the trains which millions of people in the UAE and the region have been waiting for.
They boarded the train which moved on a test track extending 800 metres and made seven full round trips. It started at a speed of 30 km/h before accelerating to 60 km/h and the test ride was made with and without a driver. "The train is a crucial milestone in the path of implementing the Dh15.5 billion Dubai Metro Project," said Al Tayer.
