Dubai: The importance of carrying out regular maintenance of vehicles, especially the brakes, was one lesson a man learned after being involved in a traffic accident.
Edgardo Enriquez, a 30-year-old Filipino, is recovering at Rashid Hospital after being involved in a traffic accident on Wednesday. Lying in his hospital bed, Enriquez recalled the details of the accident that affected his left arm, which had to be operated on.
"I was going toward Festival City from the Al Rumool Road at 8.30pm. I entered a road that did not have lights and apparently had ongoing road construction," he said.
Enriquez said he did not see the sandbags and barriers that were on the side of the road. His right tyre hit the sandbags and his car fell on its left side.
"When my tyre went on the sandbags, I hit my brakes, but they did not work, which was the main reason for my car flipping over," he said.
He said when the car flipped on its left side, he used his left arm to protect his head and face from being injured. The window of his car broke and the glass pierced his left arm.
"There was glass in my arm which required an operation and I had to have 10 stitches. Thank God I did not receive any other major injuries," he said.
Enriquez said at the time of the accident he was distressed to see his arm soaked in blood. He said he does not know why his brakes failed as he had changed them only two days before the accident.
"I advise motorists to constantly carry out maintenance of their vehicles, especially the brakes, as they are the most important part that control the vehicle and decide one's fate while driving."
