Drink-driving suspected as man dies in car crash
A 25-year-old man was killed in a terrible road accident early yesterday morning along the Baynunah Street, traffic officials told Gulf News.
Abu Dhabi: A 25-year-old man was killed in a terrible road accident early yesterday morning along the Baynunah Street, traffic officials told Gulf News.
The young Syrian man, who is suspected of driving under the influence, met with a horrific end, having his head severed from his body.
"It was a painful scene. The man's head was cut off and his body suffered multiple fractures", said an official, who asked not to be named.
Speeding
Disclosing that the incident that took place around 1.30am, the official said: "We believe he was speeding in his Mercedes car while entering the roundabout close to the Intercontinental Hotel. The driver, who was alone in the car, is suspected to have been driving under the influence as per the initial reports".
"The car first went up the pavement before crashing into the fountain at the centre of roundabout. It swerved and hit the fountain several times before coming to a stop", he added.
Investigation continues
The body of the man was taken to the morgue from the accident spot. Officials are still investigating the case.
As per the Federal Traffic Law drunk drivers face a minimum fine of Dh20,000 and a possible jail term, based on the court ruling.
Those found driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or similar substances will be slapped with 24 black points instantly which leads to confiscation and temporary suspension of the driver's licence. Additionally, the vehicle is confiscated for a period of 60 days.
Official statistics indicate that just one month after the law took effect in March, 111 drivers licences were suspended in Abu Dhabi on charges of driving while under the influence.
