Dubai: Confusion hit Dubai Airport yesterday when a number of airlines had to ground dozens of flights after an accident took place on the runway involving a Bangladeshi carrier which aborted take off.

The airport was closed for eight hours by the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) from 6.30am yesterday morning and reopened at 2pm.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG006 from Dubai to Dhaka failed to take off at around 6.30am and DCA are investigating the cause of the accident.

During the closure, thirty-one inbound flights were diverted to other airports in the UAE as well as Kuwait and Muscat, and thirty-six outbound flights were either rescheduled or cancelled.

According to Dubai Police officials, the aircraft aborted take off after a technical glitch, which caused it to skid and fall on its nose.

All 229 passengers, including crew were immediately evacuated from the aircraft, an Airbus A310. Twenty-six passengers sustained minor injuries and one sustained moderate injuries.

Shamma Lootah, manager of Press Relations at the DCA said the pilot of the Biman flight was in "okay" condition.
