Abu Dhabi: A long pit on Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street is endangering the lives of motorists.
Motorists said they have been often caught unawares by the pit, causing them to swerve or brake hard. They said an accident is waiting to happen.
Mohammad Salah Deyab from Egypt, who lives near the Al Wahda signal on Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street, said he has seen a number of accidents on this spot over the past several months.
“It should be repaired quickly otherwise, there will be a big disaster.'' he said.
Faisal from Kerala who works in the area too echoed the same sentiment.
Fairuz Hussain from Bangladesh, who works in a bakery, said the road should have been repaired by now.
Another motorist said he had seen a similar pit about two years ago on another road.
“I was travelling around 80kmph when I saw the cavity and swerved to the other lane. Mercifully, there was no vehicle on the other lane. There would have been a disaster. I then avoided that stretch and took care to change lane early enough. I would travel often between Dubai and Abu Dhabi then.''
He said this year too he has been travelling between the two emirates and nearly fell into the same trap.
“This is asking for trouble. The spot can take motorists by surprise, especially those who have not travelled to the area before. Something should be done immediately to repair these cavities which can be spotted on some streets.''
