Abu Dhabi: The move by authorities in the capital to impose a fine on those found to be in the wrong after minor accidents has evoked mixed feelings among residents.
Shanthi Gurung, who hails from Nepal, said the Dh500 penalty would have a negative impact. "It is the government who should be assisting people; I think the move will only encourage people to flee the accident scene without reporting the incident," she said.
Erica Ford, a psychologist from New Zealand, said she hoped the decision would signal a shift in the way people behaved at the wheel. "To be honest, I am very scared to drive here. Something needs to be done about the situation and I think this is a good step. It will make drivers more mindful of the rules," she added.
Speaking to Gulf News, an official at the Interior Minister's office clarified that the new fines would not be introduced from October 12 as some newspapers had reported. "From October 12, as we announced, only motorists in Al Ain and outside city limits will pay Saeed [the private company authorised to impose the fine] for their services." By the end of the year, it will be applied to drivers within the city.
Faisal Mohammad from Lebanon said: "A minor accident could happen to anyone. So why charge Dh500 for it? It's too much."
Lal Mir, who has driven a a taxi for 8 years, said he had been involved in several minor accidents over the years. "I don't feel it is justified, but what choice do the people have."
