Dubai: The tunnel boring machine Al Wugeisha 1 has completed one of its most difficult tasks by tunnelling under the Dubai Creek.
The Rail Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that Al Wugeisha 1 finished the 300 metre tunnel under the creek earlier this month, completing 800 metres in total, in which over 450 tunnel lining rings have been placed.
Less than 670 metres remain for the Al Wugeisha 1 before reaching its destination at BurJuman station, which is currently under construction, and should break through at BurJuman station in late July to complete its first tunnelling phase.
Underground
The tunnelling on the Red Line runs a total distance of 4.7 kilometres and starts at the Union Square site. To date, over 26 per cent of the tunnel excavation for the Red Line has been completed. Tunnel construction on the Green Line is yet to start.
The Dubai Metro Project will utilise three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the underground construction. A total length of 10 kilometres of tunnelling will be done by the three TBMs for both the Red and Green lines.
