Abu Dhabi: Authorities are planning to introduce road-toll system in Abu Dhabi to reduce the number of cars on the road.
The toll will be propositional to the volume of congestion, Abu Dhabi Department of Transport announced on Wednesday.
The congestion charge will go up during peak hour and go down when there is less traffic, said officials.
Also, according to officials, parking lots, accommodating between 5,000 to 7,000 vehicles, will built at the planned metro stations to encourage residents to use public transport.
The metro stations are expected to be built by 2011.
The officials, however, did not say when the road-toll system will be introduced.
Do you think this is a good initiative? Will it clear traffic congestion at peak hours?

Toll Gates are usually used in the high ways when you go to another state not between districts, however I noticed the traffic in Dubai doubled on Garhoud bridge thinking it would be a solution for traffic ease to sharjah, but invain.

I think it will just push traffic into other areas causing further congestion in built up areas if the study is not well researched.

Make issuing of driver's license to be strict again like 4 years ago.

I don't think it will work, as we have already experienced it in Dubai, and don't see any difference in traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road. We should increase the means of transportation, as people have no other choice of transportation. The way Abu Dhabi Transport Authority had introduce free bus system, they should come up with this type of unique ideas Best of luck for all future plans.

Providing better facilities of transport, rather than tolling is a better way to prevent congestion. If people see that other options are cheaper, they will naturally adopt.

I do not think introducing tolling system is a solution for traffic congestion.

Good idea, but it would be a very bad idea if they introduce it before they finish all the road works taking place on Airport Road, Salam Street and Arabian Gulf Street. All work should be done, introduce other means of transport such as a tram or metro, then introduce the toll system. Then it would make sense since people clearly have other ways and paths of transport to choose from.

It is a welcome step provided the authorities introduce enough public transport facilities. Mussafah Shaabiya is a big residential area but the bus connectivity to Abu Dhabi town is very poor. It is necessary to introduce more buses especially during morning and evening time and family buses should be introduced so that families will start using public transport system. Before introducing alternative arrangements like public buses, it is not fair to introduce toll because have no choice.

I believe this road-toll system is not a solution on this traffic situation. As we are aware some parts of Abu Dhabi roads are diverted, creating traffic in some parts. I do not think the solution is acceptable.

Dubai has toll but traffic is still congested.

How does the toll reduce the number of cars on the road? Or any other part of the world? Is this a magic spell to make cars disappear?

I like this plan. It seems to be well studied.

Let's hope they learned their lessons and complete the road systems to have an alternative choice before putting in the toll systems. If there are no alternatives, the roads will still be as congested with much more rage as people are now paying.
