Dubai: More than 600 police officers were recruited in the transportation security department for the Dubai metro transportation services, said Chief of Dubai Police.
Lieutenant-General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority on the security services provided in the Dubai Metro. The light rail service is scheduled to be operational on September 9, 2009.
According to Lieutenant-General Dahi, the first batch of 204 officers have graduated and completed a training programme at the Dubai Police Academy while the second and third groups will follow in June. During this time, the graduates will take part in workshops.
The 668 officers appointed in the transportation security department, which is part of Dubai Police's Protective Security and Emergency Department, will have a specialised building and accommodation provided by Dubai Police.
"I personally believe the metro is not just a transportation service but also a tourism feature in Dubai. In many countries the metro is underground but ours is extended in every direction which could be beneficial to see the different destinations of Dubai," said Lieutenant-General Dahi. During the press conference, Al Tayer said Dubai Police have extended their support and guidance throughout the two years of planning of the metro.
He said that based on their estimations and studies, the metro is expected to cut down around 30 per cent of traffic congestion in Dubai and 13 per cent by the public transportation.
Ample parking space will be provided in Al Rashidiya with a capacity to accommodate 3,000 cars, Al Qusais 1,700, and close to Abu Dhabi border with a capacity of 3,000, he said while adding that there are more than 3,000 surveillance cameras in and around the metro stations. "We have held extensive meetings with Dubai police to enhance our services. The range of charges and list of offences and its fines will be disclosed soon by the RTA," said Al Tayer.
Two transportation police stations in Al Ittihad and BurJuman square have been established in addition to eight police offices in the metro stations, said Lieutenant-General Dahi. A specialised operations room has been fully equipped that is dedicated for the metro stations and transportation security department.
