17-car crash on Al Ain highway
One person dies in collision between trucks on Shaikh Zayed Road.
Dubai: Over 17 cars crashed on the Al Ain highway on Saturday, causing major traffic congestion on the road.
One pregnant woman was transferred to a hospital in Dubai and many of the drivers sustained injuries, according to a senior traffic police officer.
The accident started when a taxi drifted off the road because of the low visibility and foggy conditions and bumped into a barrier on the road.
Sixteen other cars crashed into one another after the first veered off, and some of the drivers suffered serious injuries.
Thick fog and poor visibility over Dubai was the cause of two other major accidents on Shaikh Zayed Road on Friday. Both took place around 6pm.
One person died in a crash of two trucks between the seventh and eighth interchange leading to Dubai.
A 30-year-old Pakistani driver of one of the trucks was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after that.
The second driver was stuck in the truck for just over 30 minutes before the traffic police were able to help him. He suffered serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital.
In a third accident, four cars collided on Shaikh Zayed Road near Al Barsha junction, in the direction of Emirates Road. There were serious injuries but no lives lost, police said.
