Dubai: You have probably heard of the cliché 'you are what you eat' but Gulf News wanted to find out whether people 'are what they speak' so to say. Does the type of mobile phone you carry say something about your character and personality? Experts believe so.
Although there are no perfect stereotypes, it's safe to say that the type of mobile phone you use will lump you into a general personality type category.
Abbas Jaffar Ali, who is part owner of an IT company, says iphone users could be categorised as hipsters. "iPhone applications generally attract users who are generally more into fun and games," he says.
However, people also use the iphone because it has become somewhat of a fashion statement. Those who tend to wear the latest fashion and the top brands are more likely to want the perfect phone accessory for their ensemble.
As for the BlackBerry, Ali explains its outlook e-mail capabilities make the perfect phone choice for workaholics and highly ambitious people. These types of people want to be a step ahead of everyone else and the BlackBerry is the perfect tool for this. Coined the 'crackberry', the phone becomes one with the person and users can hardly function without it. "BlackBerrys are for serious people, they aren't interested in toys," according to Dubai-based IT professional Haytham Bennani.
But let's not forget the reliable Nokia. Those who use this phone have a very practical approach to life, according to our experts. "They are not trailblazers. They are into their habits, content and satisfied," Bennani says.
Ali calls these people, "average joes" who do not stray from their comfort zone in both their technology savvy and spending. They aren't risk-takers, and this can be seen in their appearance. These users would most likely wear lower-end brands that do not put a dent in their pockets or draw the attention of others.
Last but not least, we have the super geek—the ANDROID user. This would typically be the quiet introvert in class who is shy to talk to girls and bordering on socially awkward. "There are no users outside geekdom," Ali says. "Like iphone users, they love technologies and apps, but the irony is they hate apple users because of the 'geeky' rivalry," he explains. However, there is good news for ANDROID users in that with the advent of Facebook and Twitter their socially introverted personalities are flourishing through social networking, facebook and tweets! According to Ali, these geeks have become the "new cool crowd", so look out iphone users, you may have some competition coming your way.
Gadgets are fun and because we tend to be fixated with what we do and our outdoor activities are limited by choice, some take their frustrations on gadgets who can provide them the kind of excitement out from their comfor zone. so if your techy or just a normal "nokia" as long as it drives you positively then its ok to go nuts.

Very funny article... Depends on income we get mobiles... Mobiles are only for communicating not for showing who we are.

It's not the phone that reflects character and personality. If that were so, I know some big time and matured businessmen all of which can invest in a top-end mobile unit, practically everyday of the 365 days in the year. And, not just one unit a day, but multiple units for every member of their families. What decides investing in a particular make is the level of earning, the gullibility of the customer, the pseudo-lifestyle 'to keep up with the Jones' and the clever marketing/image-creating exercises of the brand/model sellers. I know when I was presented with a BB by the better-half more than three years ago, people used to make fun of me and the unit. Now the same folks swear by the same make. Talking of Nokia as the brand of simple-folks, one must realize and see the practical side of this globally most-popular brand. Even today, I also use my old Nokia, which was much ahead of its time some 6 years ago, and is even today. I also know and so must all others that if I have some monetary problem in some far-off country, I will be able to sell my Nokia unit and get some sum for it to save myself. I cant say the same about my other unit or some other brands. The Nokia is still like a piece of gold. One last point to be noted is that most of the afore-mentioned businessmen use Nokias and Vertus, and I feel a bit out of place when I have to answer a call using my BB.

Wow, all the readers who commented below should just take a deep breath and relax. Do I sense some defensiveness? Some of us may think we are way too cool to be labelled under the tags of 'geeky' or 'business-minded', but this article and quiz seem to obviously be just a light-hearted poke at how people obsess with the material items they surround themselves with. I know a lot of people who think of their mobile phones as extensions of themselves. Perhaps they were wrong all along! No harm introspecting!

I was amazed to see Android recommended for me, the one I am using now.BB is a purely Business phone & the fact is that majority of the BB users use it as a part of their job.iphone is becoming popular among youth as they think it is something trendy.

All the fuss based on the testimony of 2 people? Really? Seems like the others who commented on this article are not part of the representative population. Sorry online news readers, you do not count as any of the above mentioned 'type' of people.
Another question. How about people that own a Vertu?

Do not agree with the classifications of phones reflecting individual personality. In fact some of the points mentioned, I believe are completely reverse. Eg Blackberry is the most dangerous thing since mobile phones were invented. I have forgotten how many times I have seen people driving with one eye on the road and the other on their Blackberry. Don't think this can be described as 'responsible' or 'serious' people. In addition talking to some people with Blackberry is almost like talking to a wall, they seem too absorbed in their BBM and are completely oblivious to their surroundings and social manners. Some people (Blackberry owners) might disagree but I believe that as people are getting more and more absorbed into their phones, their social interacting skills are getting les and less.
Let's get to 'trail blazing' I personally know some very serious rock climbers and mountaineers, who own Nokias. Also I disagree with the statement in your article that Nokias are not for 'trailblazers' and are for 'average joes'. Don't think average Joe's hobbies include climbing mountains and sleeping in tents over 15,000 feet.

I don't think it makes sense to me as I know I am leaving this country in 6 to 8 months, hence what is the point that I have a classy phone and then sell it at a ridiculous price and leave this place. As I know these phones are considered locked when you go to US.

The slogan "We are the black berry boys: does not exist any more. Almost every phone can do that. Let it be NOKIA, BLACK BERRY, ANDROID, or IPHONE. Its the same.
Blackberry has services which are dientical to an Iphone. You can chat, you can email, you can play games, you can surf, you can call, you can do almost anything possible over a smart phone with the above mentioned phones. What ever has been mentioned in this article is does not make sense.

I Don't agree with this article, you can not paste a personality sticker just like that. By the way iphone users do have email facility which blackberry also has. Today both blackberry and iphone provide almost the same features. The debate is pointless and i do not subscribe to the thoughts of the writer at all.

What abt folks using the replica of the IPHones, Black Berrys. Does that increase your prestige and reflect your persoanlity? this is how we measure our selfs? persoanlity comes from our body language and our attitude.

We all have that craze when we see latest gismos and all of us would love to use mobiles tht look very cool and stylish. I am happy with the mobile i have and as long as i can use the phone then its nothing like it. Its not mandatory for me to have all the features and stuff. some are so crazy that they just keep touching the keys non stop .some have more than 2 mobiles. Seriously whats the fun abt. You might different phones for office use and personal use but i dont agree to the fact that the phone reflects ones personality. i have been using a mobile for 3 years now and i am happy with it .

BlackBerry, iPhone, Nokia, they are all the same, only difference is the appeal of which phone suits your requirements.
How BB be for serious people, where iPhone is for people who like games, that's just a wrong statement. I have both, and the iPhone is far superior to the BB. The only thing the BB is good for is emails and the security that comes with it, apart from that, there's nothing else a BB can do that an iPhone can't...actually, the iPhone does a lot more than a BB.
The only reason why people are so addicted to the BB is because of messenger, most of BB users have a BB so they can get pins from other users.
iPhone can do the same thing as BBs when it comes to emails, only difference is you have to manually download emails, or if you have a data plan, you can configure the iphone to download emails automatically.
At the end of the day, a phone never determines what kind of a person you are and this article and interview was a waste of time.

Phone surely reflects your views & charecter. For me phone should be very reliable, with flexible but with robust operating system. It should be sleek & have the latest techonology. Its need not be a gameboy or a MP3 player. If it has all the gizmo & cannot recieve a call when required its better to throw it away. Unfortunately most of top range phones today fall under this category.
