Crackdown to continue with police urging public to keep an eye out for fraudsters faking disabilities

“We arrested an Asian man who was asking for Dh10 from motorists because he claimed he did not have enough money to drive back to Sharjah. But when police approached and searched him, they found Dh19,000 in his possession,” said Colonel Mohammad Rashid Al Muhairi, Director of Tourism Security at Dubai Police.
“This is clearly another form of begging to which residents should be cautious of.”
Since the campaign was launched on July 17, police have arrested 103 beggars, including 14 women.
Colonel Al Muhairi pointed out that beggars target specific areas and frequently visit mosques, souqs and other public places, as well as knocking on the doors of private homes.
Beggars have also resorted to faking disabilities, said Colonel Al Muhairi, who urged residents not to fall victim to their decoy.
“Earlier in the week, a police patrol spotted a crippled Asian man walking [in a residential area] and they suspected he was begging,” he said.
“When one of the officers approached the beggar, he walked a bit faster and when police tried to catch up, the beggar then ran away without any difficulty, much to their surprise.”
He also added that a man arrested a few days ago admitted he had entered the country to beg and was using a false leg to convince people to be charitable towards him.
