Abu Dhabi: A number of new radars will become operational in the capital from Monday, the Abu Dhabi Police have warned.

The new speed radars will come into effect on Musaffah Truck Road, the stretch from Al Maqtaa Bridge to the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road, the road to Umm Al Nar, the road to Al Raha Beach, Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Street (Abu Dhabi-Shahama expressway), the road to Abu Dhabi International Airport. and Sweihan Road.

Last year, major road accidents fell in Abu Dhabi by 21 per cent, police say.

Captain Ahmad Al Muhairi, head of safety at Abu Dhabi Police, said the introduction of the radars is not intended to increase the number of fines issued to motorists.

“Our aim is to protect people and preserve public property,” Capt Al Muhairi said. “So as we introduce these radars, we urge drivers to be attentive and drive responsibly. They should not aim to just avoid fines but drive within the speed limit for their own and others’ safety.”

Abu Dhabi Police added that between 2010 and 2012 accidents have fallen by a third. while fatal road accidents have fallen by 34 per cent over the same period.
