Dubai: A two-week awareness campaign against interactive TV channels organised by the Juvenile Welfare Association kicked off yesterday at Zayed University.
The campaign was launched under the title "Negative Media threaten National Security". It will continue until April 18 and cover more than 15 schools.
Profit motive
"Our traditions and values are under threat. These vulgar television channels enter hour homes and bring us nothing but obscenities. Its owners want nothing but to make profit," said Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief and Chairman of Juvenile Welfare Association.
He added that it is unfortunate that many of the people who own these channels are from the region. "We live in a Muslim country and a lot of these people claim to be Muslims, but the love for money and making a quick dirham has taken over them," he said.
Dr Mohammad Murad, director of the association, said that after conducting a study last month on 500 high school students, it was found that 74 per cent of them did not know what an interactive TV channel is and what are the criteria that classify a channel as one.
Television channels dedicated to songs, short messages, magic and sorcery were some of the examples presented.
The chief of police said that "using the stick" or "scolding" are not what the children of today need. "What we need is to sit with our children and have an open and candid talk with our kids to make them know what is wrong and what is right. It is important to instil in our children proper values," he said.
