Dubai: Two new faces have joined the previous board members of the UAE Journalists' Association after the new board's elections held at Dubai Municipality's Club on Sunday night.
More than 176 members attended the JA's general assembly followed by the elections that many attendees described as "relaxed competition".
The two new members, Halima Al Mulla and Khadija Al Kathiri, scored 71 and 64 votes respectively, to join the former board chairman Mohammad Yousuf who polled 73 votes.
The final results declared were: Yousuf (73), Al Mualla (71), Saeed Salem Al Badi, (67), Hussain Al Mannai, (65), Al Kathiri (64), Sami Al Riyami (63), Mona Bu Samra (62), Abdul Rahman Al Naqi (62), and Mohammad Al Jaber (57).
Meanwhile, three individuals who nominated themselves a few minutes before the balloting started were Ahmad Al Tunaiji who polled 33 votes followed by Mona Mattar (30) and Yassin Salim (28).
Yousuf announced during the general assembly that the body is aiming to set up a permanent quarters for the Journalists' Association in Dubai.
During the general assembly, members discussed the management of the association, last year's budget (until December 31, 2005), annual report, annual activities and related topics on the agenda.
Yousuf suggested the formation of a special support committee that could help the association. He suggested some names that should work on the committee, such as Dr Abdullah Al Nowais, Habib Al Sayyegh, Tha'in Chaheen and Ebrahim Al Thihli.
Meanwhile, the annual report discussed the JA's achievements of 2005 and the special defence committee that defended many reporters who were subject to libel cases.
The election process drew mixed reactions. Some journalists praised the former board for their achievements. Others criticised the board's performance and described the election process as a 'farce'.
