Future of Arab cinema featured in event

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the festival will screen science fiction movies, thrillers and a 3D film among others.

  • Levity - Xero Error Minus 1, directed by UAE-based director Ashraf Ghori, is one of the films featured in this year's GFF.

Dubai: The third edition of the Gulf Film Festival which showcases emerging trends in filmmaking in the region was inaugurated on Friday.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the festival will screen science fiction movies, thrillers and a 3D film among others.

"While Arab cinema has traditionally explored socio-political issues, the new breed of youngsters is pushing their boundaries to bring in new cinema experiences to the Arab film industry," a statement from the festival organisers said.

World premiere

Marking its world premiere at GFF is The Curse of the Devil, directed by Emirati filmmaker Maher Al Khaja. The film portrays the story of a group of journalists who go to an island to explore the "Red Area" known as the "Kingdom of the Elves". When the group goes missing, it whips up a media frenzy as newspaper and TV reporters descend on the island in search of the journalists. The island witnesses an intense battle between humans and jinns (genies).

The film will be screened on April 12 at 9.15pm at Grand Cinema 5; April 13 at 6.15pm at Grand Cinema 10 and on April 14 at 3.45pm at Grand Cinema 9 at Dubai Festival City.

Saudi Arabian director Mohammad Helal's Hidden Evil narrates the story of three families living together in a villa. The villa is built over graves and is haunted. The families unite to discover the secrets behind their haunted home. Hidden Evil will be screened on April 13 at 9.15pm at Grand Cinema 5 and on April 14 at 6.15pm at Grand Cinema 10.

GFF's only 3D movie, The Last Mortal Journey by Kuwaiti director Omar Al Masab depicts the last journey into the next dimension. The film will be screened today at 7pm and on April 11 at 4pm at Grand Cinema 4.

Emirati film Levity - Xero Error Minus 1 by UAE-based director Ashraf Ghori explores the realm of science fiction. In the movie, scientists from the future send the first naturally intelligent cyborg, XE7, back in time to record lost history. XE7 witnesses an unexplained natural disaster. The film will be screened today at 7pm and on April 11 at 4pm at Grand Cinema 4.
