Dubai: Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) and the American University in the Emirates (AUE) came together on Thursday in a bid to further develop the UAE workforce.
Heads of both organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during a press conference at DMI's headquarters in Dubai. This is the first agreement of many in an initiative which aims at developing the training of the UAE media workforce.
"Our aim is to have this agreement with various universities across the UAE which have reputable backgrounds in the field of media and communications," said Wajdan Mohammad Dahkooni, Acting Human Resources Director of DMI. She informed Gulf News that the focus of the agreement is to "find qualified UAE nationals who are able to work in the media".
The MoU ensures that DMI will provide practical training to AUE media students in order to utilise their theory skills while still at university. This agreement will help advance their professional skills before graduation to be fully prepared for the workforce. In return, AUE will offer media related training courses to existing DMI employees at concessional costs.
Although this opportunity is not purely restricted to the training of UAE nationals, Dahkooni said: "Our main focus is on UAE nationals but if we find expatriates with [potential] we are willing to invest in them as well."
Dr Muthanna Abdul Razzaq, President and Chief Executive Officer of AUE, said: "We have students registered at our university already working here [DMI] who are the ones truly behind the signing of this agreement."
He went on to say that DMI's 22 departments offer a broad scope of skills required for the first class training of their students.
Among the four bachelor's programmes offered at AUE's College of Mass Media and Communications, Dr Razzaq highlighted the degree in Media Sales. Unique to the region, the degree aims to combine the skills of marketing and media, "to utilise the media to increase sales", he said.
